Doomsday clock just 100 seconds away from midnight

After the nuclear attack on Hiroshima and Nagasaki cities of Japan, scientists around the world started worrying that such incidents should not cause destruction of the entire earth. With this thinking, an idea came out to make a clock that records the challenges of destruction facing the world. At the same time, this watch would also alert the world about which works of humans can become the reason for the destruction of the earth. For the purpose of making such a watch, a team of 15 scientists formed an organization – ‘The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists’ in the form of a non-technical academic journal. Which included the famous scientist Stephen Hawking. By assessing such threats, this organization periodically warns people around the world how close the earth is to man-made destruction.

Two years after the massive destruction caused by the atomic attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki during the Second World War, the ‘Doomsday Clock’ was set 420 seconds from midnight, for the first time in 1947. At that time it was believed that 12 o’clock on this clock would mean that the time of the Holocaust prepared by humans on the earth has come. The Doomsday clock was changed from year to year. The reasons behind these changes are nuclear war, climate change, biosecurity, terrorism, cyber terror, hacking and artificial intelligence and the rhetoric of people in top positions.

After 1947, the minute hand of ‘Doomsday Clock’ was set just 3 minutes from midnight in 1949, because the then Soviet Union had tested its first nuclear weapon that year.

The gap is not much

In the years that followed, in 1953, when America tested the first hydrogen bomb, the doomsday clock was kept at just 2 minutes away from midnight. However, when the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty was signed in 1969, the needles of this watch were retracted and taken 10 minutes away from midnight. Now once again the danger of destruction on the world is standing and the gap is not much.

Changing time in the doomsday clock is indicating that everything is not going well. Doomsday Clock, the symbolic clock time of the assessment of the Holocaust, has changed again. Midnight on the clock is not far away.

Minute hand at the most closest point to midnight

The Doomsday Clock, has been brought 100 seconds from midnight. According to this, the less time it takes to reach midnight, the closer the world will be to nuclear and climate crisis. Even during the Cold War of America and Russia, the minute hand was kept 120 seconds away from midnight, but for the first time the clock fork has gone within 120 seconds. That is, this time the minute hand is at the most closest point to midnight in its history of 73 years.

Why this time changed in Doomsday Clock?

The threat of nuclear weapons in the world is at a peak. There is a possibility of nuclear war due to the increased tension between the US and Iran. Iran does not agree to nuclear deal. North Korea is continuously increasing nuclear capacity. Competition between China, Pakistan and India for nuclear weapons is increasing and climate change and the temperature of the earth and sea is increasing.

What is the ‘doomsday clock’

The ‘Doomsday Clock’ is a symbolic moment of assessment of the Holocaust. The Dooms Day Clock was created in 1947. After the nuclear attack on Hiroshima, Nagasaki, scientists made a Doomsday Clock.

The Doomsday Clock’s prophecy appears in ‘The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists’. A team of nuclear scientists puts its fork forward or backward. This team also includes 13 Nobel Prize winning scientists.

Changed 19 times so far

In 2017, US President Donald Trump’s statements about the use of nuclear weapons created an atmosphere of uncertainity after which the needles of the Doomsday Clock were pushed forward 30 seconds, but the Doomsday Clock was 180 seconds away from midnight. But this time the distance is just 100 seconds. Obviously, the risk of world destruction has increased in the initial month of the new year, that is, the whole world is standing at the cusp of destruction as per the watch.
