UNSC holds emergency meeting over Kashmir Issue

The United Nations Security Council has started an emergency meeting on Friday on China’s demand to discuss the Kashmir issue. This meeting is being held in a closed room. The current Chairman of the Security Council, Poland, informed the matter of being listed for discussion. This meeting will consist of 5 permanent members of UNSC and 10 temporary members.

Russia, Britain and the United States stood in India’s favor in the meeting. Russia described Kashmir as a bilateral issue. On the issue of Kashmir, China said that it is concerned about the issue of Kashmir. The situation in Kashmir is tense and dangerous. On the Kashmir issue, China advised to avoid unilateral action.

State Department Spokesperson Akbaruddin said that Article 370 is an internal matter of India. Jammu and Kashmir has been decided for socio-economic development. Outsiders have no meaning with this decision. Restrictions will gradually be lifted in Jammu and Kashmir.

China, while changing the maneuver, supported the demand of Pakistan and called for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council. Earlier, Pakistan had called for a meeting of the Security Council for open talks on the Kashmir issue, which was rejected by the UN Security Council.

Setback for Pakistan

Just before the meeting, Pakistan is hit by two tough shocks. First – UNSC turned down the demand to include Pakistan in the meeting. Pakistan is neither a permanent member of the United Nations nor temporary. Secondly, apart from China, no other permanent member has supported Pakistan. Britain, America, France and Russia say that this issue is not of UN but bilateral and the two countries should resolve together. Also, there is such a discussion that only the Kashmir issue will be discussed in the meeting, no resolution will be passed.

Giving information about the meeting, diplomats said that China had asked the Security Council to call a meeting in a ‘closed room’ to discuss the issue. After the abolition of Article 370 from Kashmir, Pakistan was constantly trying to get the support of its trusted ally China.

A diplomat said that Beijing’s close ally Pakistan wrote a letter to the Security Council President Poland in August to hold open talks on the Kashmir issue.

The diplomat said, “China had demanded a discussion on the India-Pakistan question included in the agenda of the Security Council. This demand was made in the context of a letter from Pakistan to the President of the Security Council.

Earlier, Geo News quoted United Nations Security Council President Joanna Ronca as saying that the Security Council would discuss the Jammu and Kashmir issue and a meeting could be held on August 16. When asked about the timing of the meeting, Ronca said that the meeting may be held on Friday, because the Security Council does not meet on Thursday.

India has clearly conveyed to the international community that the removal of Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir is a very personal internal matter and has advised Pakistan to accept it as well. Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres insisted on maintaining restraint from India and Pakistan and resolving the dispute under the Simla Agreement.
