Cases of domestic violence spike up in UK amidst lockdown

While positive effects are coming out of efforts like Lockdown to deal with the Corona pandemic, they also have a negative aspect. The lockdown has restricted people to homes, and is also having an impact on their family relations. Recently a report was revealed which highlighted the increasing cases of domestic violence during the lockdown period in India, now similar information has come out from Britain. From March 9 to April 19 in London, at least 4,093 people were arrested for domestic violence, that is, on average, 100 people were arrested in a day. According to the Metropolitan Police, cases of domestic violence have registered an increase compared to last year. One of the main reasons for this is people self-isolating in homes. Since March 9, it has increased by about 24 percent, which is definitely a matter of concern.

Police said that domestic violence cases resulting from family feud have also increased by 3 percent compared to last year and they have increased by 9 percent during March 9 to April 19. Such cases are not recorded as crimes. The police has to deal with cases related to domestic violence every day. In one case, when the police arrested the accused on the complaint of the victim, he was found to be related to the arms business.

Parliamentary committee demand

Police also recently assisted a pregnant woman in East London, who was hit by her partner. A parliamentary committee of British MPs called on the government to take immediate action on Monday, in view of the steady increase in domestic violence cases. The committee has asked the government to prepare a strategy keeping domestic violence in mind, so that immediate action can be taken to prevent such cases from the lockdown period and beyond. Significantly, 1,54,037 cases of corona have been reported in the UK and about 20,794 people have died.

UN expressed concern

The United Nations had expressed concern over increasing atrocities against women amidst stringent measures like lockdown. UN Secretary General Antonio Gutares said that the measures implemented to deal with the epidemic have stopped the movement of people. Because of which crimes against women have increased in many countries. Therefore, governments should deal with the pandemic and also ensure the safety of women.
