‘Symbolic blow’ says Ukraine as Russia set to assume UNSC Presidency

The war between Russia and Ukraine has been going on for more than a year. The tension in both the countries is showing no signs of easing. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said that Russia becoming the chairman of the UN Security Council is a ‘strong slap’ on the face of the global community. He said, ‘Russia can also misuse this presidency. I request that the members of UNSC should not allow Russia to do any such act.’

At the end of this month, Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov is going to preside over a meeting of the UNSC. On behalf of Russia’s Foreign Ministry, it has been said that on April 25, Lavrov will also chair the meeting about Central Asia.

The US has also objected to Russia’s role in the UNSC, which the US said is violating the UN Charter and attacking its neighbour. Such a country should not have a place in UNSC. ‘It is unfortunate that Russia is a permanent member of the UNSC;, said a White House spokesman.
