Titanic tourist submarine goes missing search and rescue operation begins

A submarine carrying people to view the wreckage of the Titanic has gone missing in the Atlantic Ocean. Search and rescue operation has started to track the submarine.

It is not clear how many people were on board the submarine when it went missing. Small submarines occasionally take tourists and experts to view the wreck of the Titanic. Travel to the wreckage of the Titanic costs thousands of dollars. It takes about eight hours to reach Titanic and back.

The wreckage of the Titanic lies 3,800 m (12,500 ft) down on the floor of the Atlantic Ocean. The wreck is about 600 km (370 mi) off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada.

The Titanic, the largest ship of its time, set sail on its maiden voyage from Southampton (England) to New York on 15 April 1912 and collided with an iceberg. Of the 2,200 passengers and crew on board, more than 1,500 were killed.

Its wreck in the sea was discovered in 1985. Since then, it has been extensively explored.

In 2022, the deep-sea mapping company Magellan Ltd. and Atlantic Productions, who are making a documentary about the project, undertook the reconstruction. Experts who spent more than 200 hours surveying the wreckage at the bottom of the Atlantic took more than 7 million photos from a remotely controlled submersible to create the scan. The luxury passenger liner sank after hitting an iceberg on its maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York.
