5G tower installed on Mount Everest

Climbers climbing Mount Everest from the Chinese region will now be able to take advantage of the 5G network. In its report, Xinhua reported that the world’s highest base station has started functioning in the remote Himalayan region of Tibet. This base station is present at the advance base camp of Mount Everest at an altitude of 6,500 meters. It has been built by China’s largest state-owned telecom company, China Mobile.

Along with the base station, the two towers at 5,300 meters and 5,800 meters, respectively, provide complete coverage of the 5G network to climbers from the northern ridge to the top on the Everest. The Xinhua report was quoted by news agency PTI as saying that the base camp is located on the Sino-Nepal border providing 5G network coverage on the Everest above 8,840 meters. It is known that 5G technology is the fifth generation wireless communication technology. In addition to high speed, 5G provides more bandwidth and network capacity which will be helpful for technologies like driverless cars.

Zhou Min, general manager of the Tibet branch of China Mobile, said the facility would provide excellent telecommunications services for mountaineering, scientific research, environmental monitoring and high-definition livestreaming activities. According to the report, the base station at an altitude of 5,300 meters will provide 5G service to the areas around the base camp area. Now climbers, tourists and local residents will be able to use the 5G service in the base camp area.

The report states that the base stations built at 5,800 meters and 6,500 meters are temporary and will provide signals during the Everest climb. The Chinese telecom company Huawei has said that it has established the world’s highest base station at an altitude of 6500 meters in association with China Telecom. Huawei claims that climbers climbing Everest will get a download speed of 1.66 GPBS and upload speed of 215 Mbps at a height of 5,300 meters.
