Earth’s weakening magnetic field could signal pole reversal say scientists

We all have read that the Earth’s magnetic field protects us from solar radiation. But this magnetic field is getting weaker now (Earth magnetic field Weakening).

According to a report, the Earth’s magnetic field has lost 10% of its intensity in the last two centuries.

The magnetic field is very important for life on earth. The magnetic field protects the Earth from radiation from the Sun and charged particles emanating from space.

A large area known as the South Atlantic Anomaly between Africa and Latin America has seen a rapid decrease in magnetic field strength. This region has seen a rapid decline in a large part in the last 50 years.

Scientists at the European Space Agency (ESA) are using data from ESA’s Swarm Satellite to study the anomaly from the Swarm Data, Innovation and Science Cluster (DISC). These swarm satellites can detect and measure the various magnetic signals that make up the Earth’s magnetic field. In the last five years, another center of low intensity has developed towards the southwest of Africa. Researchers believe that this may mean that the anomaly can divide into two different cells.

Satellites and spacecraft are also suffering due to the weakening of the magnetic field. They are also facing technical problems in orbiting the planet.

The South Atlantic anomaly has been visible for the past decade, but has developed rapidly in the last few years. Dr. Jürgen Matzka from the German Research Center for Geosciences said- ‘We are very lucky to have swarm satellites in Orbit to investigate the evolution of the South Atlantic anomaly. With these changes, the biggest challenge is to understand the processes occurring in the Earth’s core.’

The reason behind this is being speculated the most is that it may be that the time for the Earth’s magnetic pole to reverse is approaching.

Pole reversal occurs when the north and south magnetic poles are interchanged. Although these flips do not happen immediately or suddenly, they take centuries to occur, during this there will be many north and south magnetic poles around this planet.
