SUV sized asteroid flies makes a close fly past Earth
The US space agency NASA has reported an SUV-shaped asteroid passing 1,830 miles above the Earth. NASA said on Tuesday that this car-shaped asteroid passed over the earth, but there was no threat from it.
According to the US agency, in the past the asteroids have passed over the earth, but this is the first time an asteroid has come so close to the earth. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) said that even if this asteroid, named 2020QG collides with the earth, there was no possibility of any harm.
In its statement, NASA has said that about three to six meters long asteroid passed over the southern part of the Indian Ocean on Sunday. It was moving at a speed of about 8 miles per second. According to NASA, asteroids of approximately the same size pass through the earth, but they are difficult to record. This is possible only when they are coming directly towards the earth. In such a situation there is usually an explosion in the atmosphere.
In 2013, Chelyabinsk of Russia also witnessed a similar astronomical event, when a meteorite dropped there leaving a bright light. Around one thousand people were injured in this incident. Russian scientists claimed that the meteorite penetrated the Earth’s atmosphere at a speed of about 54,000 kilometers per hour and shattered into several small fragments about 50 kilometers from the ground.
NASA’s mission is to monitor large asteroids (460 ft), which can actually pose a threat to Earth, but it also tracks smaller asteroids.
