UN’s nuclear ban treaty comes into effect

The United Nations said on Saturday that fifty countries have signed a treaty to ban nuclear weapons. The fiftieth country is Honduras. The sanctions treaty has come into effect with the approval of fifty countries.

This proposal was brought by anti-nuclear activists. The treaty has been opposed by major powerful countries including the US. Betrice Finn, executive director of the International Campaign to Destroy Nuclear Weapons, said that the fifty countries that signed it are the countries that are showing the world the path to moral leadership. Fifty countries’ approval was necessary for this to take effect. The UN has also confirmed this.

Countries which have nuclear power have already refused to sign this treaty. These include America, Russia, China, Britain and France.

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, welcomed the initiative and said that we have to overcome many obstacles in this task.

The ban proposal was introduced in July 2017. On this 122 out of 193 members voted in support.

G20 countries appeal for fight against Corona

On the other hand, the UN chief has appealed to the G20 countries for a united fight against the corona pandemic. The UN chief says that it is very disappointing that the leaders of the 20 major industrialized countries did not come together in March and did not show solidarity in the war against the coronavirus in all countries. He adds that the result is that every country is sometimes taking contradictory actions, and the corona virus is now affecting many countries from east to west, north to south, with other waves of infection.
