Historic series win for India in Australia
India ended a 32-year-old dominance of Australia at Gabba, with the help of two young batsmen Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant whose innings led India to a historic three-wicket win in the fourth and final Test cricket match. India made a stunning comeback after losing the first Test match in Adelaide in which the team was skittled out for a mere 36 runs and retained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after beating Australia 2–1. This was their second consecutive series win down under and the first by an Asian Team in Australia. India registered this victory when many of its top players were not in the team due to injury or other reasons.
Shubman Gill missed a century in this match, but he hit a strong knock of 91 runs, while Pant set a good example of aggression and defense with an unbeaten 89. India had a target of 328 runs and scored 329 runs for seven wickets to register their first win in Gabba. Amidst all this, Cheteshwar Pujara’s 211-ball innings of 56 runs again showed his fighting spirit.
He gave both of his young comrades a chance to play freely. Pujara made useful partnerships with Gill for 114 off 240 balls and 61 from 141 balls with Pant. Australia lost their last Test match at the Gabba in 1988 against the West Indies. Since then, they had never lost on this ground. With this historic victory, India has grabbed the number one position, beating Australia in the World Test Championship. Australia has moved down to number three as soon as they lost the series.
What is the system of points of ICC World Test Championship
According to the point system of the World Test Championship, if you win a two-match series, you will get 60 points, 30 points if you tie and 20 points of the draw, while there will not be a single point if you lose. In the three-match series, there will be 40 points for winning, 20 points for tie and 13 points for draw.
The winning team in the four-match series will get 30 points, 15 points if a tie and 10 points for a draw. Whereas in the five-match series, there will be 24 points for winning, 12 points for tie and eight points for draw. (Both teams will get the same points if there is a tie and a draw.)
Gill breaks 50 year old record
Team India’s young opener Shubman Gill has impressed with his batting so far. Gill, who made his Test debut in this series, has broken the 50-year-old record of Sunil Gavaskar on the last day of the Brisbane Test. Gill has become the youngest batsman to score 50+ in India’s fourth innings of Test cricket and has surpassed Little Master Gavaskar in this matter. Gill did this feat at the age of 21, 133 days while Gavaskar did it at the age of 21 years, 243 days. Gavaskar scored 67 not out in the fourth innings in his debut Test against the West Indies at the Port of Spain in 1970–71. This is Gill’s third Test match, with he also surpassed his best Test score in this innings. Gill had earlier scored 50 runs on this tour.
Talking about the match, Australia won the toss and scored 369 runs batting first, in response India scored 336 runs in the first innings. Australia’s second innings was reduced to 294 runs with a lead of 33 runs and thus India have a target of 328 runs to win. Mohammed Shiraj picked up his maiden five wicket haul and was ably supported by Shardul Thakur who claimed four scalps in the third innings.
