Djokovic surpasses Federer’s record of 310 weeks as World Number 1

Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic set a new world record on Monday. He has been ranked the number-one player in the men’s category at number-1 for 311 weeks. Djokovic left behind Roger Federer of Switzerland. Federer has been at number-1 for a cumulative 310 weeks. Novak Djokovic won the Australian Open title last month. No other player in the men’s category has been at number-1 for more than 300 weeks. But they are still behind the record of three women players.

With this year’s Australian Open victory Novak Djokovic has won 18 Grand Slam titles in his career. He is only behind Federer and Spain’s Rafael Nadal in terms of highest Grand Slam titles in men’s category. Both Federer and Nadal have won 20 Grand Slam titles each. Djokovic’s longest consecutive stint at the top was 122 weeks between July 2014 to November 2016.

Roger Federer still holds the record for being No. 1 for 237 consecutive weeks. Djokovic has been at number 1 since February 2020. That means a total of 36 weeks. He was at number 1 for 53 weeks between 2011 and 2012, 48 weeks between 2012 and 2013 and 52 weeks between 2018 and 2019. Talking about the men’s category, Pete Sampras is third at 286 weeks, Ivan Lendl 270 weeks, while Jimmy Connors remained at number 1 for 268 weeks. Djokovic has ended the year 6 times as the number-1 player which is the most by any players. He is followed by Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal who have finished the year as No. 1 players 5 times in their careers.

Steffi Graf ranked number 1 for 377 weeks

Even though Djokovic will break Federer’s record next week, he will have to wait some more time to make the overall record. There are three women players ahead of him. Germany’s Steffi Graf has been at number-1 for 377 weeks. Martina Navratilova topped 332 while Serena Williams topped 319 weeks.
