French Open begins today: Rafa favorite to win 14th title

Spain’s Rafael Nadal, the King of clay, will start his campaign aiming to become champion for a record 14th time in the 2021 edition of the French Open tennis tournament starting in Paris on Sunday. If Nadal wins the French Open title this time, it will be the 21st Grand Slam title of his career. Which would make him all time leader in Grand Slams in the men’s category.

Nadal won the French Open title and 20th Grand Slam title of his career for the fourth consecutive time, defeating Serbia’s Novak Djokovic in last year’s final and also equaled Roger Federer’s record of winning 20 Grand Slam titles.

Defending champion Nadal has won the French Open title 13 times in the men’s singles category so far, followed by Bjorn Borg in the Open Era six times. Nadal has got the third seed in the tournament this time.

Nadal is only the third player in the world to have won the French Open title in 2008, 2010, 2017 and 2020 without missing a set. In addition to him, Illy Nastase has done this feat in 1973 and Bjorn Borg in 1978 and 1980. The Spanish players has lost only two out of 102 matches in Paris and holds an envious 13-0 streak in the finals of Roland Garros.
