‘Flying Sikh’ Milkha Singh passes away aged 91

India’s legendary athelete Milkha Singh has died at the age of 91 from Corona. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his condolences by tweeting. His health had deteriorated a lot on the previous day. According to reports, he had fever again and his oxygen level had also dropped significantly. Milkha Singh, 91, was admitted to the hospital after being infected with Corona.

The Prime Minister of the country, Narendra Modi has condoled the death of Milkha Singh. He tweeted that, “We have lost a colossal sportsperson, who captured the nation’s imagination and had a special place in the hearts of countless Indians. His inspiring personality endeared himself to millions. Anguished by his passing away.”

Milkha Singh’s name will be written at the top of the list whenever Indian sport is mentioned. He was the country’s first track and field superstar. Milkha Singh breathed his last in Chandigarh on Friday night. The highlight of Milkha Singh’s career came when he missed out on a medal in the 1960 Rome Olympics by 100th of a second.

National record of 200m and 400m

Milkha Singh reached the 1956 Melbourne Olympics as a raw talent. His performance that year was not good. But in the years to come, Milkha not only refined and carved himself but also made many records in his name. The national records of 200 meters and 400 meters were in Milkha’s name. However, Milkha was not great only because of the Rome Olympics. Milkha’s achievements in the Indian track and field are immense.

Milkha Singh was recognized as an athlete who was extremely passionate and dedicated. At the 1958 Tokyo Asian Games, he won gold medals in the 200m and 400m. In the Melbourne Olympics, Milkha could not qualify for the final event.

Milkha Singh once again stepped on Pakistani soil  overcoming the horrors of partition and prepared himself for the race. He faced star player Abdul Khalid. The Indian star defeated the Pakistani player in his own backyard, in front of his audience. General Ayub Khan was also impressed of Milkha’s speed and he gave him the title of Flying Sikh while giving him the medal.

Earlier, Milkha Singh’s Covid-19 test came negative on Wednesday, after which he was shifted from Covid ICU to normal ICU but then on Thursday his health deteriorated significantly.

This week, Nirmal Milkha Singh, wife of Milkha Singh, died of Corona at the age of 85. Milkha Singh was admitted in the ICU of PGI Hospital at that time due to which he could not attend the cremation of his wife.
