George Floyd death case: Ex-cop gets over 22 year jail sentence
The verdict has come in USA’s George Floyd case. Policeman Derek Chauvin, convicted of killing Floyd, has been sentenced to 22 years and 6 months in prison. This decision has come a year and 32 days after the incident on 25 May 2020. Derek Chauvin’s bail was immediately canceled following the verdict and he was arrested. Floyd’s murder case was referred to a jury.
Lawyer tried his best to save Derek
During the hearing, Floyd’s lawyer said in front of the jury that even a child can tell that the police’s method was wrong about the way Derek Chauvin killed George Floyd. However, Derek’s lawyer also tried his best to protect him. The lawyer argued that Derek Chauvin had taken the right action and that heart disease and drugs were the cause of Floyd’s death, 46.
The neck was pressed for 8 minutes 46 seconds
During a demonstration in Minneapolis last year, Floyd was caught on the street by police officer Derek Chauvin and who held him down with his knee on Floyd’s neck for 8 minutes 46 seconds. Floyd was handcuffed. In such a situation, he had been continuously pleading with the police officer to remove his knee, but the police officer did not agree.
The video of the incident also went viral. In which Floyd was pleading the police officer, ‘Your knee is on my neck. I am not able to breathe.’ Slowly, Floyd’s breathing had stopped. After this Derek said to Floyd to get up and get in the car, but he did not respond. During this, a lot of crowd had gathered around. Floyd was taken to hospital, where he died.
