Government of India gives final warning to Twitter to comply with new IT rules

The central government seems fully committed to ensure compliance with the new IT rules. In this regard, this time the central government has given the last warning to Twitter amid the ongoing dispute with the social media giant for a long time. The government on Saturday issued a notice to Twitter giving it “one last chance” to comply with the new IT rules immediately. The government has warned that if Twitter fails to comply with these rules, it will forfeit the exemption from liability under the IT Act.

Last warning to the microblogging site

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology said that Twitter’s refusal to comply with these rules shows that the microblogging site lacks commitment and does not want to try to provide a secure experience to the people of India on its platform. It has been indicated that if they want to do business in India, then they will have to follow the rules and regulations of the country.

This is also the reason for displeasure

Significantly, Twitter has not yet given any reply regarding the appointment of Chief Compliance Officer. On the other hand, the Resident Grievance Officer and Nodal Contact Person appointed by Twitter are not employees of Twitter. Twitter has reportedly given its address to the office of the law firm, which is not valid according to the rules.

The Ministry of Information Technology said, “Despite operating in India for more than a decade, it is hard to believe that Twitter has refused to develop a mechanism that enables the people of India to share their issues on its platform in a timely manner.” It would have helped in the solution through due process in a transparent manner.

Government gave last chance

The ministry said that although these rules are effective from May 26, 2021, but in good faith, Twitter Inc is given an opportunity to comply with the rules through a final notice. The company has to comply with the rules immediately.
