Drones used to create ‘artificial rains’ in UAE amidst soaring temperatures
In the United Arab Emirates, one of the hottest places on earth, the mercury has crossed 50 degrees Celsius. Now a special technique is being used to get rid of the scorching heat. Artificial rain is being done here with the help of drone technology in collaboration with the University of Reading, UK. The country’s National Meteorological Center has also shared footage of its success.
How does it work?
Through this technique, an electric shock is given to the clouds, which causes rain. It is expected that by using this technique as a trigger, the amount of rain can be increased. With the help of drone technology, when an electric shock is given to the clouds, they start aggregating together, which causes rain.
The Meteorological Center says that the amount of rain can also be increased through cloud seeding. The UAE is one of the 10 hottest countries in the world. It receives an average of only three inches of rain a year. Projects worth $15 million are being run to increase rainfall and cloud seeding is also a part of that.
Earlier, Professor Maarten of Britain’s University of Reading told the BBC that the amount of clouds was sufficient for rain in the UAE. The drone helps the water droplets stick together by releasing the charge. When these droplets become bigger and heavier, then it rains.
The program’s director, Alya Al-Mazroui, told Arab News that ‘drones, which release electric charge, are carried into the air and create movement in the clouds, which causes rain. For this it is seen in advance what is the condition of the clouds. Drones are launched as soon as clouds are seen forming. It is not that it rains every time you give a charge but mostly it does.’
