Scores missing as Germany, Belgium grapple with severe flood

Rivers are in spate after record rains in Germany and Belgium and river banks have broken. The havoc of rain is flood and due to this disaster, at least 70 people have died so far. Most of the deaths have occurred in Germany but at least 11 people have also died in Belgium. Apart from this, there is also news of the disappearance of many people.

The most affected by floods are in the Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia provinces of Germany. Along with this, the situation in the Netherlands is also not good. More heavy rain is expected in the entire region on Friday. Local officials say that this disaster is a result of climate change.

North Rhine-Westphalia Premier Armin Laschet, during a tour of an area affected by rain-floods, cited global warming as the main reason. He said, ‘We will have to face such incidents again and again and this means that we need to intensify climate protection measures because the impact of climate change is not limited to any one state.’

Experts say that due to climate change, there is every possibility of more such natural disasters, but it is not right to link any one event with the result of global warming.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who arrived in the US for a meeting with US President Joe Biden, has said she was deeply shocked by the disaster. Angela Merkel in one of her addresses described the flood situation in Germany as a catastrophe. She also expressed condolences to those who lost their lives due to the floods and said that the death of the people is sad.
