World Earth Day is celebrated every year on 22 April. The earth is home not only to humans but also to millions of animals and plants, but humans are causing many types of harm to the earth to fulfill their needs. Due to which many problems like floods, pollution, climate change, global warming are being seen. Even now, if these problems are not taken care of, they can become the cause of many more calamities in the future. World Earth Day is celebrated every year on 22 April with the aim of making people aware of the importance of earth and nature.
Theme of World Earth Day 2024
Every year World Earth Day is celebrated with a theme. Its theme in the year 2024 is – ‘Planet vs Plastic’. The objective of this theme is to end the use of single use plastic and to emphasize on the search for its alternatives. The theme of the year 2023 was “Invest In Our Planet”.
How did Earth Day start?
The idea of celebrating Earth Day was first proposed by peace activist John McConnell at a UNESCO conference in 1969. Initially, the purpose of celebrating this day was to honor the earth. Earth Day was first celebrated in the United States on April 22, 1970. In 1990, Dennis Hayes proposed celebrating this day globally in which 141 countries participated. In the year 2016, Earth Day was dedicated to climate protection. Currently, the Earth Day network spans 20,000 partners and organizations in 190 countries.
