Government clarifies stance on ITR filing last date; no extension in December 31 deadline

It was expected that the GST Council meeting may take a decision to extend the last date for filing ITR due to less return filing and problems in the portal. It has been made clear by the Central Government that the last date for filing returns is 31st December 2021, it is not being extended further.

No proposal to extend the last date

Revenue Secretary Tarun Bajaj has shared this important information on behalf of the government. He has said that there is no proposal to extend the last date for filing income tax returns. Bajaj said that the work of filing income tax returns is going on smoothly. A total of 5.62 crore income tax returns have been filed till 3 pm on Friday. He said that till the last date more than 20 lakh number of returns have been filed. Apart from this, 60 lakh additional returns have been filed this year.

Those who are anticipating the extension of the last date for filing ITR due to the reasons mentioned above, should start filing income tax returns first. Because if ITR is not filed, then you may have to face problems in the new year and in return you may have to pay a fine of up to Rs 5000. So if you want to avoid these troubles, then definitely file your return before 12 midnight on December 31.
