British PM Boris Johnson unveils ‘plan to live with Covid’

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson briefed the UK cabinet on plans to live with COVID-19, declaring it a moment of pride on Monday. The plan will mark the end of all legal restrictions related to the pandemic. Johnson acknowledged that although the pandemic is not over, the country has started moving towards normalcy due to vaccines.

The British Prime Minister is expected to brief Parliament on the next steps related to coronavirus testing, mandatory self-isolation norms, before Downing Street addresses one of his last COVID-19 news conferences.

PM Johnson said before the announcements on Monday that ‘today will be a proud moment after living in the most difficult period in our country’s history as we begin to learn to live with COVID. He said this would not have been possible without the efforts of the NHS, which have pushed the vaccine program forward at unprecedented speed. Our scientists and experts showed their commitment to the general public for the safety of themselves and their loved ones. The pandemic is not over, but thanks for making the incredible vaccine program a success. We are now one step closer towards returning to normalcy and finally giving back the freedom to the people while protecting themselves and others.’

Downing Street confirmed over the weekend that legal restrictions linked to the COVID-19 pandemic were expected to end within a few days. The country’s COVID-19 law was enacted in March 2020 to help the country’s healthcare cope with the crisis. The restrictions were imposed on indoor gatherings, regional level systems as well as under ‘Plan B’ measures after the fast-spreading Omicron variant emerged last year.
