Strict lockdown imposed in Shanghai after 2 years as Corona cases soar

The cases of corona virus are increasing rapidly in China. Shanghai has banned all residents from leaving their homes, further tightening lockdown restrictions for people living in the eastern part of the city. Even walking their pets is prohibited. This step has been taken by the local administration at a time when the daily Covid-19 infection in the city reached a record 4,477 on Tuesday.

All residents of Pudong district, the offices of several elite financial institutions and the Shanghai Stock Exchange, will be confined to their offices and will only be allowed to leave if they have undergone a COVID test. Bloomberg News gave this information on the basis of statements issued by people living in residential complexes.

Biggest lockdown in two years in Shanghai

In Shanghai, China, the biggest lockdown imposed in two years began on Monday to conduct a large-scale investigation to detect cases of Covid-19. Shanghai, China’s financial capital and largest city with a population of 26 million, had earlier imposed a limited lockdown on the surge of Covid cases, in which residential complexes and work places were closed.

Biggest lockdown after Wuhan in Shanghai

The citywide lockdown will be implemented in two phases and will be the biggest lockdown after Wuhan. The first cases of corona virus were found in Wuhan itself at the end of 2019 and there was a lockdown for 76 days. According to the local government, Shanghai’s financial center Pudong district and its surrounding areas will be closed from early Monday to Friday, and a city-wide COVID-19 investigation is being conducted.

Shanghai Disney Park Closed

In the second phase of the lockdown, there will be a five-day lockdown from Friday in the western areas of the Huangpu River. Local people will have to stay at home. Offices and business establishments will remain closed and public transport services will also remain suspended. Already, many activities were banned within the city with a population of 2.6 crores. Shanghai Disney Park has also been closed.
