Asia Cup Hockey: India thrash Indonesia 16-0; close doors for Pakistan in world cup

Defending champions India defeated hosts Indonesia with a dominant 16-0 scoreline to secure a place in the knock stage of the Asia Cup hockey. With India’s victory, Pakistan was out not only out of the tournament but also from the World Cup slated to be held next year. India scored 6 goals in the first two quarters. After this it was as if the rain of goals started. One after the other, the Indian team scored 10 more goals. Dispan Tirkey scored 5 and Sudev scored three goals for India. Now in Super-4, India will face Japan on 28 May.

India needed to win the match against Indonesia by a margin of at least 15 goals to move ahead in the tournament. But the Indian hockey team did not allow Pakistan to reach the knockout stage by scoring one goal more.

Earlier, the match between India and Pakistan was tied at 1-1. At the same time, Japan defeated India. After this Pakistan also lost to Japan. In such a situation, India had to beat Indonesia by a margin of at least 15 goals to enter the Super-4 stage. Only then India would have been able to overtake the neighboring country Pakistan on the basis of goal difference.

The Indian hockey team showed a similar game against Indonesia and got the ticket for the knock out by scoring 16 goals.

In this way both India and Pakistan had four points each in Pool A and both were behind Japan. But, India got a place in Super-4 on the basis of better goal difference (1). Not only this, the top-3 teams of Asia Cup get entry in the World Cup, while Pakistan remained out of this list, then it was also out of the World Cup. Pakistan’s campaign ended with the defeat on the other hand. Pakistan had restricted India to a 1-1 draw in the league match.
