Disproportionate assets case: Former Haryana CM sentenced to 4 years
A decision has been taken on the punishment of former Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala in the disproportionate assets case. Former Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala, convicted in a disproportionate assets case by a special CBI court in Delhi on Friday, sentenced him to four years’ imprisonment and also imposed a fine of Rs. 50 lakh. Not only this, the court has also ordered confiscation of four properties of Chautala.
The court has ordered to take Om Prakash Chautala into custody from the courtroom itself. In this way, Chautala will go straight to jail from the court. On behalf of Chautala, 10 days’ time was sought to file an appeal in this case, on which the judge said that you go to the High Court. After the completion of the hearing on Thursday, the court had reserved the decision.
Special Judge Vikas Dhul heard the arguments on the sentence of OP Chautala and CBI lawyers, who were convicted of acquiring disproportionate assets during the year 1993 to 2006. During the debate, OP Chautala had requested for at least punishment on old age and medical grounds.
At the same time, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) requested for maximum punishment, saying that this will send a message to the society. The agency said that Chautala does not have a clean history and this is the second case in which he has been convicted. The court last week convicted Chautala and said that the accused had failed to give satisfactory account of the additional assets acquired disproportionately from the known sources of income during the said period.
The CBI had registered a case against Chautala in the year 2005. The agency, in its chargesheet filed on March 26, 2010, had alleged that Chautala had amassed assets disproportionate to his lawful income between 1993 and 2006. According to the FIR registered by the CBI, Chautala had acquired movable and immovable assets disproportionate to his known source of income by connivance with family and others while being the Chief Minister of Haryana from July 24, 1999 to May 5, 2005. This property was acquired in the name of Chautala and his family members. According to the CBI, Chautala has amassed assets disproportionate to Rs 6.09 crore which was 189.11 per cent more than his known source of income.
