Shooting at US supermarket kills 10, police suspect hate crime

An 18-year-old white man dressed in military uniform opened fire with a rifle at a supermarket in the US city of Buffalo on Saturday. At least 10 people died in the attack, while three others were injured. Officials have called it “violent extremism motivated by racial sentiment”.

He told that the attacker was wearing a shield . He was also wearing a helmet, on which he broadcast the incident live with a camera mounted on it.

According to reports, the attacker broadcast the shootout on the streaming platform Twitch for at least two minutes. However, this platform immediately stopped its broadcast.

According to police, the attacker shot 13 people before surrendering. He later appeared before a judge and was arrested on charges of murder.

“I hope this man, this white supremacist who has committed a hate crime against an innocent community, will spend the rest of his life behind bars,” New York Governor Kathy Hochul said.

Buffalo Police Commissioner said the attacker shot four people outside the store. In response, a security guard inside the store fired several shots and one bullet hit the gunman’s bulletproof jacket, to no avail. This security guard is a retired police officer of the Buffalo Police.

According to the commissioner, the assailant then shot dead the security guard and opened fire on other people in the store.
