Djokovic wins 10th Australian Open title; equals Nadal’s 22 Grand Slam record

Serbia’s tennis player Novak Djokovic won the 22nd career Grand Slam title by defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas in the Australian Open 2023 final played at Melbourne Park. With this win, he equaled Rafael Nadal’s record of winning 22 singles titles who were eliminated in the second round in the tournament. Djokovic overcame a hamstring injury to beat Tsitsipas 6-3, 7-6(4), 7-6(5) in a men’s singles match that lasted more than three hours at Rod Laver Arena.

Tsitsipas, who was the 3rd seed, played better after losing the first set, but Djokovic managed to score points on crucial occasions. In the deciding game of the last set, Tsitsipas had two points in his favor after Djokovic had three championship points at 6–3, but Djokovic took the title when his last shot fell out of court.

Djokovic has equaled Rafael Nadal (22) in terms of winning the most Grand Slams. Also, this is the 10th Australian Open title for the Serbian, while recently retired Roger Federer is second on the list, having won the tournament six times after him.

Djokovic played very well at some crucial moments during the match and with this win, he will again reach the top of the ATP rankings. Now his winning streak in hardcourt tournament has increased to 28 matches. A year ago, he missed the Australian Open as he was not able to defend his title due to not getting vaccinated against COVID-19. But since then the government’s restrictions have eased and the 35-year-old got a visa this time despite not getting vaccinated.

Djokovic already had the record of winning nine Australian Open trophies to which he added one more title. His 22 major championships include seven Wimbledon, three US Open and two French Open trophies. He is now tied with Rafael Nadal for the most Grand Slam titles in tennis history with 22. Tsitsipas thus went 0-2 in major finals. He also lost to Djokovic in the 2021 French Open.
