Snow Leopard snapped by trap cameras in Nelong Valley

The movement of a snow leopard one of the most elusive species on Earth has been captured in a trap camera in Chorgad area of Nelong Valley. Last year, before the gates of Gangotri National Park were closed for winter, the park administration had installed 40 trap cameras at different places in the area. The park administration team is slowly recovering data from these trap cameras.

There are estimated to be around 35 to 40 snow leopards in the Gangotri National Park area. Many wildlife are found here along with snow leopard, brown, black bear, red fox, Himalayan monal, bharal, argali sheep etc. For the purpose of monitoring and research of wildlife in winter, the park administration installs trap cameras here.

Last year also, the park administration had installed a total of 40 trap cameras in Kedartal, Gomukh track, Karchha, Chorgad, Tirapani and Nilapani of Nelong Valley and Bhairon Ghati, Gartang Gali in the park area. Recently, a team of the park administration brought out trap cameras installed at Chorgad in Nelong Valley, out of which one trap camera showed a snow leopard moving around while another captured the picture.

The team of Wildlife Institute of India has also installed 65 cameras in Nelong Valley for the purpose of monitoring and research of wildlife activities.
