The southwest monsoon is expected to reach Kerala this year with a delay of four days. According to the Indian Meteorological Department i.e IMD, the monsoon can reach the southern state by June 5. It usually knocks in Kerala on 1st June. With this, the official start of monsoon (rainy season) is considered in the country.

Last year i.e. in 2022, the monsoon reached Kerala on 29 May. Whereas in 2021 it reached on 1 June.

Normal rain forecast this year

Monsoon is expected to be normal this year. The Meteorological Department had given this information last month. If the rains are normal, then food grain production in the country will also be normal. That is, it can provide relief from inflation. Farmers in the country usually start sowing summer crops from June 1. This is the time when monsoon rains reach India. The sowing of the crop continues till the beginning of August.

What is normal rain?

The IMD said that the rainfall is likely to be 96% of the Long Period Average (LPA). If the rainfall is between 90-95% of the LPA then it is said to be below normal. If the LPA is 96%-104% then it is called normal rainfall.

If the LPA is between 104% and 110%, then it is called excess rainfall. More than 110% is called excess rainfall and less than 90% is called drought.
