Strong winds uproots many trees in Haldwani

The storm that came late in the evening yesterday, uprooted many trees across the district. As perĀ  media reports, a High Court advocate died when a giant tree fell on his moving car on Rampur Road in Manpur West. Traffic was affected at many places in the city due to falling trees. The storm, which moved at a speed of 70 km per hour, destroyed power poles, lines, causing power failure.

The weather was normal till Tuesday evening but life came to a standstill due to the storm that hit at 10:50 pm. First a cloud of dust blew up. Hundreds of trees along the road were uprooted by the strong winds that accompanied the rain. A huge tree fell on the car on Rampur Road, which trapped the driver. Police and locals tried their best to rescue him for more than two hours but by the time the driver was pulled out, it proved to be too late. Due to the storm, power supply failed in most areas of the district including Haldwani, Lalkuan, Nainital, Bhimtal. After about three hours, when the storm stopped, people left for their homes. There is a possibility of widespread damage due to lightning in many areas.

The exact extent of damage in the district could not be ascertained. In Nainital too, there was hailstorm accompanied by strong wind and power supply came to a standstill. Traffic was disrupted in Haldwani due to falling of trees and all the roads including Bareilly Road, Rampur Road, Nainital Road, Kaladhungi Road were blocked. After a while it also started raining.

The Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert regarding bad weather in Dehradun. According to meteorologists, there was a strong storm due to the Western Disturbance.
