Wimbledon 2023: World’s oldest tennis tournament to begin from tomorrow

Wimbledon, the oldest tournament of tennis, is starting tomorrow at the All England Club in London. This is the 136th edition of the 146-year-old Grand Slam tournament. Wimbledon has not been organized only during World War 2 and the Corona epidemic in 2020. It is also called the most prestigious of the four Grand Slams of tennis.

According to the organizers of Wimbledon, tennis originated on grass courts, so even today games are played on grass, maintaining that tradition. The club has 18 grass courts.

Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam tournament not organized by a National Tennis Association. It is organized by the All England Club. The club was founded in 1868. Together, 6 members started the All England Tennis and Croquet Club and later they started the Wimbledon tournament in 1877.

Today it is a private club and has 500 members. The Princess of Wales is the owner of this club.

Third grand slam of the year

There are 4 Grand Slams in tennis. All four are held annually, beginning with the Australian Open in January. The French Open is held in May and June. Wimbledon in July and the US Open in August-September. The US Open is the last Grand Slam of the year.

Wimbledon is the only championship that is still played on grass courts. The French Open is played on clay courts, while the Australian and US Open are played on hard courts.

In Wimbledon-2022, Novak Djokovic became the men’s champion and Elena Rybakina was the winner in women. Due to the Corona epidemic in 2020 and 2021, not all spectators were allowed to watch the match. Wimbledon Championships in 2022 were held with full crowd after 2 years. Then Novak Djokovic of Serbia defeated Nick Kyrgios of Australia in men’s singles. And in the women’s singles, Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan became the champion by defeating Ons Jabeur of Tunisia. Novak Djokovic who recently won the French Open would be aiming for a record extending 24th Grand Slam by defending his crown in Wimbledon. A title win in London would also make the Serb level with Roger Federer who leads with most triumphs with 8 trophies in Wimbledon in the men’s singles. In the women’s singles Martina Navratilova has won 9 championships against her name.
