6.8 magnitude earthquake in Morocco, more than 296 dead, many injured

The tremors of a powerful earthquake were felt in Morocco late on Friday (September 8). At least 296 people died due to tremors. According to the report of the Associated Press, the country’s Ministry of Interior said that ‘the intensity of the earthquake has been measured at 6.8’.

According to local media reports, the death toll from the earthquake may increase significantly. According to the US Geological Survey, the epicenter of the earthquake was at a depth of 18.5 km, 71 km south-west of the tourist city of Marrakesh. The tremors were felt here at around 11:11 pm local time. After some time, aftershocks of the earthquake were also felt at these places, whose intensity was measured at 4.9.

After a strong earthquake, people got scared and ran away from their homes. The earthquake caused heavy damage to historic buildings and power cuts. The US Geological Survey said the quake occurred at 11:11 pm (2211 GMT) 44 miles (71 kilometers) southwest of Marrakesh at a depth of 18.5 kilometers. As per media reports at least 296 people have died and 153 have been injured in the earthquake in Morocco.
