Asia Cup: Centuries by Kohli, Rahul propel India to 356 runs

The teams of India and Pakistan came to play in the Super-4 of Asia Cup on Sunday (10 September). The match was not completed on Sunday due to rain, so both the teams played on the reserve day on Monday (September 11). Team India resumed its innings from its overnight score of 147 with Kohli and KL Rahul both hitting unbeaten centuries to take India’s total to 356. Virat Kohli again broke multiple records in the match. He has completed his 13 thousand runs in ODI. Kohli played a brilliant innings against Pakistan at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. This was also his 4th consecutive century on this ground, equalling Hashim Amla’s record for most consecutive centuries in a venue in ODI. He became the fifth batsman to complete 13 thousand runs in ODIs.

Before Kohli, master blaster Sachin Tendulkar, former Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara, former Australian captain Ricky Ponting and former Sri Lankan captain Sanath Jayasuriya have scored more than 13 thousand runs. However, Kohli went ahead of all these giants in one respect. He became the player to score 13 thousand runs in the fewest innings. In this matter, Virat broke Tendulkar’s record.

47th century of Kohli’s career

This is the 47th century of Kohli’s ODI career. He is just two steps away from the Sachin’s record of scoring most centuries in this format. Tendulkar has scored 49 centuries in 463 ODI matches. Kohli has scored 47 centuries in 278 matches. Virat still has to play at least two more matches in the Asia Cup. If Team India reaches the finals then they will get three matches. In such a situation, he can equal Tendulkar or even go ahead of him during this tournament itself.

After Tendulkar and Kohli, the ones who have scored the most ODI centuries are Indian captain Rohit Sharma and former Australian captain Ricky Ponting. Rohit has scored 30 centuries in 247 matches and Ponting has scored 30 centuries in 375 matches. After these two, former Sri Lankan captain Sanath Jayasuriya is in fifth place. He has scored 28 centuries in 445 matches.
