Varunavat Landslide: Survey complete; Geologists to submit report

After studying the landslide on the mountain of Varunavat, the team of geologists returned on Sunday. The team conducted a detailed investigation of the causes of the landslide for two days and will now submit its report to the government in a couple of days.

The team believes that if there is more than 100 mm rainfall in an interval of two-three hours, the landslide in Varunavat can increase, while there is hard rock on one side of the landslide area. The landslide has occurred from the part of the stones and debris collected earlier on the mountain of Varunavat near Gofiara.

This landslide started due to the collapse of the old debris and stones collected near the hard rock after heavy rainfall. According to geologists, it has become clear that the landslide from the peak of Varunavat in the year 2003 has no connection with the landslide near Gofiara.
