Study claims lockdown helped curb spread of Coronavirus in Europe

Lockdown and other efforts in 11 countries of Europe prevented the spread of corona infection. This is revealed in a study by Imperial College London. This research is also important in the context of India as the prevalence of the disease during the lockdown in the country did not decrease. Therefore, the debate on the effectiveness of lockdown is still ongoing in the country. But the lockdown in these 11 countries has been claimed to be 99.9 percent successful.

The research stated that between 120 million and 150 million people had been infected with corona in European countries, Belgium, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, France, Italy, Spain, Britain, Austria, Denmark and Norway. Which is 3.2 to four percent of the population here. But in late March, lockdown or non-medical measures were taken in these countries, such as closing of schools, closing of religious places, social distance, use of masks etc., it benefited greatly. The lockdown in these countries has been relaxed in the first week of May, but these countries have brought down Corona’s reproduction rate below one percent. This means that the disease is under control. Research claimed that nearly 1.5 million people had already been infected, up to 10 times more than Corona reported in these 11 countries.

But if these steps were not taken, then these people would spread the disease to other people also. Because in countries like Belgium, Corona recorded the highest attack rate of 3.8. The disease could have taken a more frightening form there. Not only this,  it could have led to more deaths of 31 lakh people. Similarly, another study by the University of California, Berkeley analyzed 1,717 measures, including lockdown, for the prevention of corona in six countries — China, the United States, South Korea, Italy, Iran, and France. It was found that if this was not done, the outbreak of the disease could have been 465 times in China, 17 times in Italy and 14 times in America.
