New study claims Corona causing brain shrinkage
The infection of Corona virus, which has changed the course of the history of the world, continues unabated even today. Now there has been a decrease in new cases in our country, but in many countries its speed has started increasing. Along with this, the fear of fourth wave of covid-19 is also being expressed in June-July. No one knows when the corona will end but its fatal consequences are always coming to the fore. Research is being done all over the world on the subsequent conditions of Corona. Their results are also shocking. Now a horrifying thing has come to the fore in a study by Oxford University. According to the study, the brain of people suffering from corona has started shrinking.
Scientists have found that there is a big difference between the pre-MRI of the brain and the post-corona MRI of people who have been suffering from corona. Even people who had mild symptoms of corona, the size of their brain has also started shrinking gradually.
Grey matter of the brain is decreasing
The most dangerous thing is that due to the small size of the brain, the gray matter of the brain is decreasing. A person’s memory is formed due to grey matter. It is also directly related to the recognition of smell. Although researchers do not yet know whether this change in the brain after corona is permanent or not, but they emphasized that the brain is adept at healing itself. More information about this can be obtained only when research is done on it for a long time. This study of the researchers has been published in the prestigious Nature Journal.
Gwenaelle Douaud, professor and lead researcher at the Wellcome Center for Integrative Neuroimaging at the University of Oxford, said that at present, the brains of patients with mild symptoms of corona were tested in the research. We wanted to see how much the brain changed before the disease and after the corona. This result was shocking.
Brain shrinks by 2 percent
Under the UK’s Biobank project, a database is being prepared about the health of 5 lakh people for the last 15 years. Out of these, the people who have got corona, their earlier MRI and now MRI are being compared. In the study, an average of 401 people were MRI scanned again 4.1 months after corona. Apart from this, 384 people were also included in this study who did not have corona but had an earlier MRI. People from both these groups were later subjected to MRI.
MRI analysis showed that people who had mild symptoms of corona, their brains were reduced from 0.2 percent to 2 percent. Apart from this, the graey matter in the olfactory area also reduced. It is due to grey matter that smell is recognized and the ability of memory is formed. The study also found that people who had recently recovered from corona were finding it more difficult to do brain work.
