Canal construction work to supply water to Nepal begins

Under the treaty with Nepal, the Government of India has started construction of 1200 meter long channel (canal) from Tanakpur barrage to provide water for irrigation to Nepal. Nodal agency NHPC has contracted a Delhi-based company to build the canal in two and a half years. One thousand cusecs of water will be supplied to Nepal from the canal under construction.

Under the treaty between India and Nepal in the year 1991, the Government of India has constructed about 1200 meters long canal from Tanakpur barrage to Matena village in Nepal to supply one thousand cusecs of water for irrigation. The exercise intensified in the last three years following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s directive to fulfill this condition of the nearly 19-year-old treaty. After survey of the land for channel construction, the Forest Department carried out marking of trees coming under the ambit.

Nodal agency NHPC has started channel construction through Delhi-based firm ANS Company after cutting 1643 trees in the area. The contractor company has started digging the canal with machines.

According to GM Gupta of Tanakpur Power Station of NHPC, a hundred meter wide and four meter high channel is being constructed in Nepal end, 150 meters north of Tanakpur barrage. Construction is to be completed by July 2021.
