Over 150000 people effected by floods in Myanmar

Due to the rains again in the flooded southeastern Myanmar, there is danger of rivers overflowing their embankments. Due to floods, about 150,000 people were forced to leave their homes and a dozen people died. Water flooded on the vast land of cultivation in four provinces and the rescue teams are trying to reach the villagers by boat. Food packets are being provided to those who are disabled in rural areas or refuse to leave their homes. Flood water in Bago area is only a few inches below the upper boundary of embankments in the Bago region but local people fear that fresh monsoon can cause flood-like conditions.

The leader of the rescue team, Hlaing Min Oo said, “If the embankment does not remain strong until the next flood, there will be more danger on many more villages.” He was inspecting the work of the volunteers for flood victims Keeping the food stuff on the boat. It has been reported in the media that 148,386 people have taken shelter in 327 camps at present. Significantly, in some low-lying areas of southeast flood water is decreasing, but the monsoon season has started in the country and there may be more rains in the coming weeks. The entire population in Bago, Karen, Mon and Tanintharyi provinces have been ordered to go to safe places. In these areas, water in dozens of dams and reservoirs is flowing above the danger mark.
