Dominic Thiem overcomes Federer to win first Indian Wells Masters title

25-year-old Austrian Dominic Thiem beat veteran Roger Federer to win the Indian Wells Masters 1000 2019 title. The match lasted 2 hours and 2 minutes, Thiem wonhis first Masters 1000 title with a 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 scoreline.

World number 8 Thiem reached the final of the tournament for the first time. This is his 12th career title. Federer had reached the final for the ninth time in this tournament. He has won the title of Indian Wells five times. The last time he became champion was in 2017. In the final, he had defeated compatriot Stan Wawrinka 6-4, 7-5.

This was the fifth confrontation between Federer and Thimm. Thiem has won 3 while Federer has been successful in winning 2 times. Thiem had earlier defeated Federer 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 in the 2016 Stuttgart semi-final.

Thiem beat the World No. 14 player Milos Raonic 7-6, 6-7, 6-4 in the semi-finals. In the second semi-final, Rafael Nadal did not play due to knee injury giving Federer a walk over.

In the finals, Federer hit three aces while Thiem hit one. Thiem had 3 double faults compared to 2 by Federer. However, Thiem was able to achieve break points 3 times, while Federer had been able to do this twice.
