Thousands take to streets in Hong Kong to protest against extradition

In Hong Kong, the world’s leading economic center, life came to a standstill due to the strike on Monday. The transport system was affected the most by the strike. More than 200 flights were canceled. During this time, police again fired tear gas shells to chase thousands of protesters who took to the streets. Thousands of protesters had gathered at many places in the city. They also had a clash with the police.

China-backed Hong Kong chief executive Carrie Lam warned the protesters that they are pushing the city into a very dangerous situation and challenging China’s sovereignty. He rejected the demand for resignation, saying that his government was determined to maintain law and order. While protesters, talking of continuing the movement, accused Lam that he was disturbing the situation by ignoring the sentiments of the people.

Protest against Extradition Law

There is a protest against the proposed extradition law in Hong Kong since June. This disputed law provides for extraditing the accused to China for trial. This is being the biggest protests since 1997 in China-controlled Hong Kong since 1997. Britain had handed Hong Kong to China with this condition in 1997 that it will maintain its autonomy.

More than four hundred people arrested so far

Protests have continued in Hong Kong since June 9. More than four hundred people have been arrested since then. Around one thousand rounds of tear gas shells have been fired to disperse the protesters.

90 lakh reward for info on who threw Chinese flag at sea

Former Hong Kong leader CY Leung has announced a reward of one million Hong Kong dollars (about 90 lakh rupees) to the informer about the person who threw the Chinese flag into the sea. During the demonstration on Saturday, someone removed the Chinese flag on the Victoria Harbor and threw it into the sea.
