Novak Djokovic withdraws from US Open due to shoulder injury

World number-1 Novak Djokovic, who came to defend his title at the US Open, has received a big blow. His journey to the US Open has come to an abrupt end. Serbian star Djokovic, who faced against Stan Wawrinka in the fourth round, had to retire due to a shoulder injury. He was trailing 4-6, 5-7, 1-2 against Wawrinka while leaving the court.

Djokovic sought medical help after losing the second set. He returned to the court after a shoulder massage, but soon had to be out of the competition due to pain. His Swiss rival 23rd seed Wawrinka said, ‘You never want to end a match like this. I am really sorry for Novak, he is a wonderful friend.’

In fact, Djokovic’s shoulder injury was revealed before the tournament, he was seen in the second round against Juan Ignacio Londero of Argentina. However, he later appeared to be recovering from injury. Djokovic managed to reach the final-16 on Saturday by winning against American player Denis Kudla in straight sets.

“I don’t want to talk about my injuries,” Djokovic told reporters. It is noteworthy that Djokovic, 32, who won 16 Grand Slam singles titles, captured the Australian and Wimbledon titles this year.
