Lake forming behind Badrinath could cause destruction similar to Kedarnath

In 2013, the Chaurabari lake above the Kedarnath shrine caused havoc. Now, scientists have expressed concern about ‘Parital Lake’ located in the Alaknanda River Basin in Badrinath Dham region.

Although the situation is out of danger right now, the scientists doing research on Lake Parital believe that the way in which the area and water level of the lake is increasing from year to year, there may be a big danger in the coming years.

In such a situation precautionary steps need to be taken by the government and disaster management department in time. Research conducted by the Union Ministry of Forests, Environment and Climate Change under the National Mission on Himalayan Studies (NMHS) has revealed that in the water level of Parital Lake situated at an altitude of 5584 meters ahead of Mana village in Badrinath Dham region. There is a steady growth.
3754782.09 cubic meters of water is in the lake.

According to the scientists doing the research, while the area of Lake Parital was 0.08 sq km in the year 1994, it has increased to 0.12 sq km in the year 2001, 0.17 sq km in the year 2011 and 0.21 sq km in the year 2018.

The team of scientists under NMHS, under the leadership of Dr. KC Tiwari of Delhi Technological University, New Delhi, has done research on Lake Parital in their study, found that 17.8 meters deep in the Alaknanda River Basin in the high Himalayan region at an altitude of 5584 meters. Parital Lake has 3754782.09 cubic meters of water.

Slope of Parital Lake is less than 10 degrees

Research scientists believe that due to the slope of Lake Parital being less than 10 degrees, it may prove to be a big threat in future. However, scientists also say that currently there is no danger.

The research of the National Mission on Himalayan Studies has revealed the study of Parital lake located in the higher Himalayan regions. The area of the lake and the amount of water in it are increasing year after year. There is no big danger at the moment. Yet governments and disaster management department officials need to be vigilant. A detailed report is being prepared in this regard, which will be submitted to the Central Government.
