Many Americans dependent on Food banks after losing jobs, homes

The coronavirus pandemic is showing ill effects not only on the people but also the economy. The United States of America which is the most powerful economy of the world has also been gripped by the by the virus. Due to this there is lockdown in various states, due to which many businesses have been closed and 22 million people have become unemployed. In the grip of Corona virus, the US has so far reported 792759 cases and 42514 patients have lost their lives. Unemployed people in the US are facing the biggest brunt of this epidemic. They and their families are struggling to feed themselves.

People keep waiting for their number to come in lines outside the Food Bank for hours. Due to strict restrictions during lockdown, these people depend on donors for food and drink. But there is also the fear here that the day is not far when the tsunami of such people can ruin America.

Demand for food packets increased 40 percent in March after the lockdown at Pennsylvania’s Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. Outside this center, about a thousand cars were testifying to the situation of unemployment here. Similarly, about 227 tonnes of food packets are being distributed in different 8 distribution centers. According to the Brian Gulish, Vice president of this organization, many people are taking this service. These include people who have this first experience. He has never seen such a bad situation before.

He told that there are 350 food banks in Southwest Pennsylvania and people do not know about them, so people come to the same center and wait for their turn. This is the reason that at some centers the lines of people are extremely long. People from New Orleans to Detroit are turning to food banks after becoming unemployed.

After the pictures of Texas and Antony’s Food Bank went viral, the gravity of the situation there was brought to light. This picture was revealed on 9 April. 10,000 cars were parked outside a food bank here. The people sitting in these also stopped there at night and waited for their turn.

According to Gulish, at present, the supply of food to these people continues without restriction, but how long it will be able to remain without restriction remains to be seen. The reason for this is that this number of unemployed is increasing continuously.
