Wawrinka ends Sumit Nagal’s run at Prague Open 2020

Indian tennis player Sumit Nagal challenged three-time Grand Slam winner Stan Wawrinka in the quarter-final of the Prague Open on Thursday (20 August), but lost after winning the first set. The 23-year-old Indian raised hopes of causing an upset after wining the first set against Switzerland’s strongman 6-2.

But that could not happen and the 127th ranked Indian was defeated by world number 17 Wawrinka by winning the next two sets 6–0 6–1 and entering the semi-finals. The match lasted for one hour and 19 minutes.

Sumit Nagal won a set at the US Open last year against 20 Grand Slam winner Roger Federer but lost the match. He won the quarterfinal of the 137,560 euro prize clay tournament by winning 5-7 7-6 6-3 against lower ranked local player Jiri Lehecka.

Born on 16 August 1997, Sumit Nagal recently turned 23 years old. He won the doubles title at the 2015 Wimbledon Youth tournament and became the sixth Indian player to win the Junior Grand Slam title. He represents the Indian team in the Davis Cup.

Bryan Brothers pull out of US Open 2020

Bob and Mike Bryan will not feature in the US Open men’s doubles category this year. This is considered to be the end of the career of these 42-year-old twin brothers of America. The 16-time Grand Slam champion Bryan brothers won five Grand Slams in New York, with the last win in 2014. Mike won the title alongside Jack Sock in 2018, when Bob was undergoing treatment after a hip operation.

American Tennis Association announced preference for the women’s and men’s doubles category. Three-time champion Kim Clijsters got a wild card in doubles. The tournament will begin on 31 August with singles matches. The doubles matches will be played from September 2. In this, 32 teams have been given entry instead of 64 due to Corona virus pandemic. On the men’s singles side some of the big names will be absent from this year’s US Open including former champion Roger Federer and current champion Rafael Nadal.
