Naomi Osaka wins second US Open title

The final of the women’s singles was played at the US Open 2020 tournament on Saturday. Naomi Osaka of Japan scored a come from behind victory to beat Victoria Azarenka of Belarus 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 to capture the US Open title for the second time in a career. This is Osaka’s third Grand Slam title overall.

This final of the US Open women’s singles was played at the USTA Billy Jeans King National Tennis Center where Naomi won the title even after falling behind in the first set.

It was a disappointing defeat for Azarenka, who lost in the final as she reached the finals of this prestigious tournament for the third time but has not been able to win even once. Earlier, in 2012 and 2013, she had lost to veteran player Serena Williams who she beat in this year’s semi final.

The 31-year-old Azarenka easily won the first set of 26 minutes. However, Osaka turned the tables after this and won the match. Trailing by a break in the second set after losing the first set, Osaka said after winning the title, “I thought it would be quite embarrassing to lose the match within an hour.” She said, ‘I thought I will have to change my attitude and work hard in order to win.’

This thinking worked for Osaka and she made a strong comeback to take the title to herself. This is the first time in the US Open after 25 years when a woman player won the title after losing the first set in the final. Earlier in 1994, Arantza Sanchez Vicario did this act against Steffi Graf.
