Women’s Hockey World Cup 2022: Team India placed in Pool B

The Indian women’s hockey team has been placed in Pool B for the World Cup to be held in Spain and Netherlands from July 1. India is placed alongside England, New Zealand and China. The Indian team had recently qualified for the World Cup by finishing third in the Asia Cup in Muscat. The Indian team was in the top eight for the first time in the last World Cup.

Indian team’s experienced goalkeeper Savita Poonia said in a press release by Hockey India, “It is a difficult pool because in the world rankings, England (at number three) and New Zealand (at number eight) are above us and China can upset at any time”. She said, “Our focus as a team has always been on our performance, not on the ability of the opponent. Now that we know who to play in the pool stage, we can prepare accordingly.”

Savita further said, “It was a very good tournament which gave us confidence. Holding England to a draw on their soil was a big deal for us in 2018. We came close to beating Ireland in the quarter-finals but lost in the shootout.”

The teams in Group A are Netherlands, Germany, Ireland and Chile. Hosts Spain, Argentina, Korea and Canada are in Group C, while Australia, Belgium, Japan and South Africa are in Pool D.
