Common Wealth Games 2022: Mirabai Chanu wins first Gold for India

The Indian team performed very well on the first day of the Commonwealth Games. On the second day, India got its first gold medal in weightlifting. Mirabai Chanu created a new Games record by lifting the total of 201Kg and won the gold in Commonwealth for the second consecutive games. Earlier, Sanket opened India’s medal account by winning silver. After this, Gururaja won the bronze medal for India in the 61 kg weight category. On the second day, Navjot Kaur, an experienced player of the Indian women’s hockey team, was found to be Covid positive and will have to come back to India.

Sanket Sargar won India’s first medal in 55 kg weightlifting competition. Sanket lifted a total of 248kg with a 135kg clear jerk, while Malaysia’s Aneek lifted 249kg with a 142kg clear jerk to claim the gold. Following Sanket, second weightlifter Gururaja Poojary gave India its second medal at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022. Poojary won the bronze medal in the 61 kg event by lifting a total of 269 kg. Apart from weightlifting, in badminton, India beat Sri Lanka’s team 5-0 in a one-sided fashion. At the same time, boxer Mohammad Hussamuddin defeated Ajmole Dyey of South Africa in a one-sided manner in the round of 32. Hasamuddin has now reached the round of 16.
