Cyclone Sitrang: Red alert issued for 4 states
After hitting the coastal area of Bangladesh, Cyclone Sitrang has knocked in India. The Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert in Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura. Red alert means that there is a possibility of heavy to very heavy rain in these states. According to IMD, Sitrang will enter India this evening.
On the other hand, wind speed reaching 100 to 110 km/h is also blowing over Tripura, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Manipur, and Nagaland. Many districts of West Bengal, Odisha and Assam have witnessed rains due to the storm. West Bengal CM Mamta Banerjee has asked the administration to be on alert mode.
Earlier on Monday, Sitrang caused huge destruction in Bangladesh. 11 people were reported dead there due to the cyclone.
Cyclone alert in 7 states
Earlier, the Meteorological Department had issued an alert for 7 states. The seven states that have been put on high alert include Tripura, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Manipur, West Bengal and Nagaland. Apart from this, light to moderate rain is also likely in Odisha. On Tuesday, the maximum impact of Sitrang is likely to be on the coastal areas of Sundarbans and East Midnapore.
