Over 120 reported dead as riots breakout after football match in Indonesia

Violence erupted after a football match in Indonesia. Then in the stampede, 127 people were killed and a large number of people were injured. News agency Reuters quoted police as saying that the spectators of the losing team were enraged and attacked the pitch. Police fired tear gas shells to control the miscreants, after which a stampede broke out and hundreds of people were killed.

The incident took place on Saturday night after a football match of the Indonesian league BRI Liga 1 at the Kanjuruhan Stadium in Malang Regency, East Java. Indonesia’s police chief in East Java province, told reporters that the pitch was attacked by supporters of the losing side after the match between Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya. After which the officers had to release tear gas to pacify the attackers, which led to a stampede. It is being told that many people have also died due to suffocation.

In video footage posted on social media, people can be seen running on the stadium pitch in Malang. At least 127 people died in this incident while more than 100 people were injured.

According to local media reports, people have died due to assault, stampede and suffocation. There are also two police officers killed in the stadium. Around 180 people injured in the incident are being treated at the hospital. However, it is not yet clear how many people were seriously injured.

A video shows a large number of people entering the field and throwing footballs here and there, when policemen come and chase everyone away. During this, some people are seen hanging on a net, while some are running towards the stands.
