ICC ODI World Cup 2023: Second win for team India; defeat Afghanistan by 8 wickets

The 9th match of the World Cup 2023 took place between India and Afghanistan. The match was played at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi won the toss and decided to bat first. Afghanistan scored 272 runs for 8 wickets in 50 overs. Team had India made one change in its playing 11. Shardul Thakur got a chance in this match in place of Ravichandran Ashwin, who played in the last match. Team India defeated Afghanistan by 8 wickets in this game.

At 63 for 3 Afghanistan were in a tough spot before Hashmatullah Shahidi (80) and Azmatullah Omarzai (62) stitched together a 121 run stand to take them to 272 at the end of 50 overs. For India, spearhead Jasprit Bumrah was the pick of the bowlers with 4 wickets to his name.

Record breaking century for Rohit

Rohit Sharma hit his 7th ton in 50 over World Cup in India’s victory today. Rohit who is playing his 3rd edition of the ODI World Cup went past Sachin’s record of 6 centuries. In the last edition he had hit 5 centuries which are also the most at a single edition of the tournament. Apart from this Rohit achieved another feat, by leaving behind West Indies batsman Chris Gayle. ‘The Hitman’ has now become the batsman who has hit the most sixes in international cricket.

By hitting 4 sixes during the World Cup match, he has completed his total of 555 sixes in international cricket. West Indies’ great batsman Chris Gayle had hit a total of 553 sixes in all three formats of international cricket. Rohit Sharma has now created a world record by leaving Chris Gayle behind.

Rohit was ably supported by Ishan Kishan (47) as the duo put together 156 run stand for the opening wicket. Home town hero Virat Kohli hit the winning runs for team India and remained unbeaten on 55 as India chased down the score with 15 overs to spare.

The men in blue are now at the second spot in the standings with 4 points after two games and now will face Pakistan in Ahmedabad on October 14.
