Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman win Nobel Prize 2023 in Medicine

The announcement of the winners of Nobel Prize 2023 will start from today i.e. 2nd October. There are 351 candidates for the Nobel Prize this year. Today the Nobel Prize was awarded in the field of medicine. Since the Nobel Prize was started in 1901, till 2022, 225 people in the field of medicine have been honored with it. Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman won the Nobel Prize 2023 in Medicine. They were given this honor for their discoveries related to nucleoside base modifications. This discovery helped in the development of effective mRNA vaccines against coronavirus i.e. COVID-19. Nobel Committee Secretary Thomas Perlman announced the winner at the Korolinska Institute.

Last year, Svante Pääbo of Sweden was honored with this prize. He received this award for the discovery of DNA of a special type of primitive man. The committee formed to award the Nobel Prize had believed that his discovery would help in better understanding the evolution of humans and their migration in the world.

The awards carry a cash prize of 11 million Swedish kronor, or one million US dollars. The funds come from a bequest left by the award’s founder and Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel. He died in 1896.
