Earthquake of 7.2 magnitude in Xinjiang, China; tremors felt in NCR

An earthquake of 7.2 magnitude occurred on the China-Kyrgyzstan border at 11.39 pm on Monday (January 22). The epicenter of the earthquake in southern Xinjiang was 22 km below the ground. According to news agency Reuters, many buildings have collapsed in the earthquake and many people have been injured. At the same time, according to China’s Global Times, 120 houses were completely destroyed by the earthquake.

40 aftershocks have also been recorded after the earthquake. The maximum impact of the earthquake was felt in Urumqi, Korla, Kashgar, Yining. China’s Xinjiang Railway Department says that they have had to stop the operation of 27 trains.

According to the National Center for Seismology, the intensity of the earthquake was measured at 6.1. Its center was about 220 kilometers below the ground in Hindukush.
